Sanyo Xacti DMX-CA100 – First Waterproof Full HD Camcorder

Sanyo’s Xacti DMX-CA100 would be a good enough HD camcorder on its own right—a 1/2.33-inch CMOS sensor, 5x optical zoom, 2.7-inch LCD, takes 14MP still pictures—if it weren’t also waterproof. But watching it work underwater? That’s something else.UPDATE

The video comes courtesy of DigInfonews Tokyo, and while it doesn’t quite have the Jacques Cousteau moments I was hoping for, it’s still pretty impressive.

The DMX-CA100 can be used for up to an hour at depths of 3-meters, which is more than enough to capture some crucial snorkeling or monsoon footage.

It’ll be available in Japan at the end of June for about $440, and although no international release has been announced, Sanyo’s generally good about getting their products to the US in due time. Let’s just hope they’re on it in time for swimming pool season.

UPDATE: We were a little hasty in labeling the DMX-CA100 as being the world’s first waterproof full-HD camcorder—indeed, as several commenters pointed out, the Kodak PlaySport, GoPro HD Hero, and a couple of last year’s Xacti models manage waterproof shooting (albeit at 720p)
