TDK shows the optical disk 1 TB (1 terabyte)
TDK demonstrated at CEATEC a new optical storage capacity of 1 TB. Back in 2007, the company Mempile argued that developed the technology to record 1 TB drives, and by 2011 the 700 GB model of these drives will be available at a cost of $ 30. Unlike Mempile, TDK demonstrated a prototype of such a disk.
From normal Blu-ray discs in which information may be stored in up to 4 layers, the new TDK discs differ in that they can be used up to 16 layers on each side of the disc. Capacity of a single layer is 32 GB, for a total of 1 TB.

TDK prototype, in principle, can join the spec Blu-ray, because the prototype TDK, in principle, to join the specification of Blu-ray, because it uses similar materials and technology, to the parameters of laser beams.
The downside of increased capacity is increased thickness of the drive. It is 260μm, which is a more than 2 times greater than that of Blu-ray, which leads to additional aberration.
With regard to a possible release date of new drives, it is worth noting that TDK has not yet started to produce 320 GB, 10-layer drive, shown at CEATEC in 2009.
